How to Make a Short Link With a Custom Slug

By ERAGO · Published · 3 min read

A long messy URL turning into erago.site/promo

A random short link like erago.site/x7kq2ab does the job, but nobody remembers it, and some people hesitate to tap a link they can't read. A custom slug fixes both. erago.site/promo tells people where they're going before they click. Here's how to make one and how to name it well.

Why use a custom slug?

  • Trust. A readable link looks intentional. People are more willing to tap erago.site/menu than a string of random characters.
  • Recall. Someone can hear it on a live stream or read it off a banner and type it later.
  • Easy to say out loud. "erago dot site slash workshop" works on the radio, in a podcast or at the front of a classroom.
  • Organized. When you look at your dashboard, you know what each link is for.

How to make one on ERAGO

  1. Paste your long URL into the box on the ERAGO homepage.
  2. Sign in or create a free account. You land on the new-link screen with your URL filled in.
  3. Replace the random slug with the name you want, for example promo. If it's taken, try a variation like promo-okt or kopisenja-promo.
  4. Save. Your link is live at erago.site/promo.
  5. Copy it, or download its QR code from the same screen.

Need to change the destination later? You can, for free. The slug stays the same, so every place you've shared it keeps working.

Slug naming rules that work

  • Keep it short. One or two words. Under 15 characters is a good target.
  • Lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only. ERAGO slugs are 3–32 characters and can't contain spaces, underscores or capitals, so there's no Promo vs promo confusion.
  • Use hyphens to separate words. grand-opening reads better than grandopening.
  • Skip look-alike characters. Avoid mixing 0 and o, or 1 and l.
  • Make it describe the destination. menu should open the menu, not a promo.
  • Add a time or place if you'll reuse the idea. promo-okt, bazar-ubud.

Examples you can copy

UseSlug idea
Monthly promoerago.site/promo-okt
Event registrationerago.site/workshop26
WhatsApp order chaterago.site/order
Café menuerago.site/menu
Portfolio or catalogerago.site/katalog

For WhatsApp, point the slug at a wa.me link with a prefilled message, and customers land in a chat with you, ready to order.

When to add a QR code

A custom slug is perfect for anything people read or hear. Add a QR code when people are holding or looking at something physical: a flyer, a table tent, packaging or a poster. Use both together. Print the QR, and put the readable slug right under it for anyone whose camera won't cooperate.

A short slug also makes a simpler QR code that scans better at small sizes. See what size a printed QR code should be before you send anything to print.

The free plan includes 25 short links, each with its own custom slug and QR code. You can also connect 1 custom domain for free, so links can live on your own address. Pro ($5/month) adds unlimited links, more custom domains and click analytics. See the pricing page.
